#BEA-14 was my second venture into #BookExpoAmerica at the Javits Center in NYC. The first time, without mentioning names, I paid an exorbitant price to have my #book displayed with other Indy’s. I couldn’t even stand by it to talk to folks who might show an interest. I was quite disillusioned. This time was different and I will tell you why.

Before I get to the good parts, there are some things you should be aware of before you decide to attend BEA-15.

You cannot buy or sell #books. This trade show is primarily for publishing companies and book distributors to show you what they have to offer, and how to contact them. There are also “workshops” related to #authors, books, publishing and current marketing trends.

There are a lot of authors, famous and not so famous, who are sponsored by their publishing companies, who are there to autograph free copies of their books. In many cases (I don’t know about all) the author provides the books (paying for them).

It is a huge show. This year I noticed the increasing number of booths featuring turning your book or manuscript into eBook format.

My Advice? Make a plan. Download the map of vendor booths. Decide where to visit based on a Google search of the vendors you are most interested in.

BEA FOR THE NON-PUBLISHED: Spend a day, check out the speakers and attend as many of the lectures as you can. I believe a day pass is $75.00 and can be purchased on-line. You will gather important information about the industry.

Find #books in the #genre you would like to #publish. Look at the books that are being promoted by #publishers. Look at format and #coverart, font size and layout.
Go home and Google all aspects of creating a book, for example, graphics. The Internet is a vast resource.

I didn’t see much in the way of agents, but I wasn’t looking for them. One way to check into agents is to go to the library, find some books in your genre, look at the acknowledgement page. Authors often mention their agents. Agents have websites with submission guidelines. #reading #read #write
